About the Symposium

The North American Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (NAFAPA) is the North American branch of the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (IFAPA). It is an international organization dedicated to the promotion, dissemination, and application of research in the field of physical activity for the benefit of populations with disabilities or special needs and their families.

The primary aim of the biennial North American symposium is to disseminate innovative research to improve the health, education, and functioning of infants, children, and adults who have an impairment through physical activity and sport. An additional aim is to foster collaborative relationships between researchers across the United States, Canada, and other countries.

The Symposium theme is Revisiting our Research Assumptions 20 Years On: The Role of Interdisciplinarity, which builds on the 1996 symposium hosted by the University of Alberta in Banff, Canada with the theme Questioning our Research Assumptions. The theme of the upcoming Symposium is intended to invite researchers and students to reflect on ontological and epistemological challenges, this time through an interdisciplinary lens, with the intent of decreasing the research and pedagogical divides that persists across the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

Symposium Registration

Early bird registration begins January 15, 2016 and ends June 15, 2016. The early bird registration rates are below:
  • Faculty - $275
  • Student - $175

After June 15, 2016, regular registration rates will apply.
  • Faculty - $325 
  • Student - $225

Abstract Submission

The abstract submission deadline has been extended from April 1, 2016 to May 1, 2016. Notification of abstract acceptance will be emailed to all applicants by June 1, 2016.

Abstracts from all research areas are welcomed, and students are encouraged to submit an unpublished research paper for the Patricia Austin Graduate Student Award or an abstract for the Greg Reid Outstanding Student Poster Award. Submissions for research presentations and building sessions will be adjudicated by a scientific committee.

Research and Poster Abstract Submission

Students who submit a research abstract can elect to enter the Greg Reid Outstanding Student Poster Award competition. Applicants must check a preference for a poster presentation, as well as a desire to be considered for the award (see research abstract submission form above). To be eligible for the award, students are required to state what was found or discovered in the study and how these results or findings have implications for the field. Applicants who submit a research proposal, meaning they do not have data at the time of submission, will not be considered for the award. Instead, these students should submit a graduate student proposal abstract (see form below).

Graduate Student Proposal Abstract Submission

The Patricia Austin Graduate Student Award is intended to recognize scholarly research conducted by a graduate student in the field of adapted physical activity. Applicants must submit an unpublished paper of his or her graduate research study by May 15, 2016 to be considered. The applicant must be the principal author of the scholarly paper and have been registered as a student in a recognized graduate program at the time the study was conducted. The award recipient will present their research during a special session. Applying for this award does not indicate acceptance for a research presentation. To be considered for a research presentation candidates must complete a research abstract submission.

Patricia Austin Award Guidelines

Please note that you can only be considered for one of these awards, not both, and must plan to attend the 2016 NAFAPA symposium. Adjudication for the Greg Reid Outstanding Student Poster Award will occur during the poster session at the symposium. Graduate students are expected to present their own poster, not their supervisor.

Graduate Course

An intensive three day graduate course will be offered that brings together faculty and students from predominately Canadian and United States universities, focusing on the latest research and thinking in adapted physical activity. The course will involve a pre-conference seminar, instructed by Canadian and International instructors in advance of the NAFAPA symposium, followed by engagement with symposium keynote plenary lectures, faculty and student presentations, building sessions, and poster presentations intended to enrich learning, inspire reflexivity, and creativity in research. A debriefing of the symposium learnings will take place at the close of each symposium day. A tentative course outline is now available here.

Accessibility Commitments

Physical Accessibility

The conference area at The Matrix is located on the second floor of the hotel and is accessible by elevator. The conference rooms are in close proximity and each have an accessible entrance, with the exception of the Amber Room which has two entrances. The Amber Room can be accessed using stairs or a lift that requires entering through a side door.

The bathrooms located on the second floor are wheelchair accessible. The hotel itself does not have gender-neutral bathrooms, however gender-neutral washrooms are available in the Starbucks on the main floor of the hotel. You will need to exit the hotel to access Starbucks.

Visual Accessibility

To make visual presentation materials more easily readable, we ask that conference presenters follow best practices for visual accessibility. For people who might not know what these best practices are, here are some considerations:

  • High contrast between the text colour and background colour 
  • At least 14 point font for PowerPoint slides, and even larger for posters presentations
  • Avoid decorative fonts; recommended fonts include Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, and Tahoma
  • The use of ALL CAPS or italics is not recommended
  • Use bold fonts sparingly
  • Include a short description of visual images (including video)

The poster specifications for the student and regular poster sessions are different. Please ensure the dimensions of your poster are correct. Push pins will be available on site for you to hang up your poster.

Posters being considered for the Greg Reid Outstanding Student Poster Award (on Wednesday, September 21) should be 48 inches high by 36 inches wide (portrait orientation).

Posters presented at the regular session (on Thursday, September 22) should be 36 inches high by 48 inches wide (landscape orientation).

Linguistic and Aural Accessibility

The keynote presentations will be ASL interpreted. In addition, we encourage conference presenters to close caption video with speaking. This is important for people with hearing impairments who do not speak ASL and people using English as a second language. You can close caption videos in iMovie and Final Cut Pro.

Symposium Hotel
