Dr. Scherer joined the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation in 2005.



Current Research

1) Community-based participatory action research on the impacts of a new, ‘world-class’ arena and downtown entertainment district in Edmonton (SSHRC-funded through 2019).

2) The provision and uses of inner-city sport-for-development and leisure opportunities in divided urban centres (CIHR-funded).

3) The political economy of sports broadcasting in the digital era (SSHRC-funded).

4) The political debates over the construction of publicly-funded major league sports facilities and entertainment districts.


Dr. Scherer teaches a range of socio-cultural undergraduate courses, as well as a graduate course in Sport and Popular Culture.
