Geology is the study of Earth. Geologists explore our planet by examining what lies beneath our feet –rocks, minerals, magma, water, fossils and more. We decipher the processes that shape Earth and we find the natural resources that are the basis of almost everything we use. We teach and practice stewardship of our planet and we work on understanding and predicting natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides and volcanic eruptions. As geologists, we study the origin and evolution of life and its relevance to animal and plant populations today. Examining how Earth’s climate has evolved through time helps us to understand modern climate change. If you are interested in learning about our planet through a field that integrates multiple disciplines and focuses on real world applications, then Geology is the science for you.
Field schools and studying and experiencing geology in the outdoors (here at Crowsnest Pass and near Nordegg, just east of Jasper National Park) are important components of a geology degree
Once you have completed either the Honors or Specialization degree you will have the required course work to qualify for registration with APEGA, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta, which regulates the practice of these professions in Alberta.
The career opportunities open to you as a geology graduate include employment with companies engaged in exploration for, and production of hydrocarbons, metallic and non-metallic minerals, coal, diamonds and groundwater. Geoscientists are also employed by consulting companies that carry out environmental assessments and remediate contaminated water aquifers and industrial sites. In addition, you might find employment in government agencies for resource or environmental management. UAlberta geology graduates are found among the top ranks of major companies in the natural resources sector, in provincial and federal geological surveys, and as professors in major universities around the world.
