A Tragic Loss

Dear Faculty of Science family,

We mourn the loss of four of our cherished Faculty of Science members,
Pouneh Gorji, graduate student, Master of Science in the Department of Computing Science;
Arash Pourzarabi, graduate student, Master of Science in the Department of Computing Science;
Saba Saadat, undergraduate student, Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences;
Sara Saadat, alumna, 2019, Bachelor of Science in Psychology.

There is a lot to process as we deal with this tragic event. You may find that you need support at
different times in the coming hours, days, and weeks ahead. As I mentioned in my message last night,
you are not alone, and support is always available to all members of our community.

The University of Alberta, along with members of the greater Edmonton community, is planning a memorial
for this Sunday, January 12 from 3-5pm in the Main (competition) gym at the Saville Centre
on the University of Alberta South Campus. I encourage you to attend, and I along with
various members of the Faculty of Science will be present to support you and our entire community.
Further details will be shared in the coming days on the University’s main site.

With my sincere condolences,

Matina Kalcounis-Rueppell
Dean of Science
