CALGARY - The Mount Royal Cougars made a swift comeback after last night's defeat to the Alberta Pandas, the Cougars taking the match in straight sets (25-22, 25-19, 25-21) despite some strong pushback, Saturday night at Kenyon Court.
Fourth-year outside hitter Kory White led her team with 14 kills while setter Elyse Hart tallied 24 assists. Alberta drops to 5-5 on the season.
For the Cougars, fifth-year outside hitter Chantel Park earned 12 kills while setter Quinn Pelland had a strong 29 assists, Mount Royal improving to 11-1.
The first set began with a Cougars lead, which stayed strong throughout the set. The Pandas stayed close on their tails, nearly tying the match at 20-21. The Cougars stayed tough, however, and took the set 25-22 with a kill by Quinn Pelland.
The Pandas were coming on in the second set until the Cougars surpassed them at the fourth point. The two squads traded points as they vied for control, but Mount Royal pulled ahead after a 17-17 tie and held steady. Chantel Park ended the set at 25-19.
The third set was also close as the teams once again traded points. For a moment, the Pandas took control of the set and the opponents were neck-and-neck until 21-21. In the end, the Cougars made a series of hard kills and one service ace to take the set 25-21.
Tonight’s match marked the final game of 2019 for the Cougars. They will be hosted by the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday, January 10th, at 6 p.m. PST. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op. Alberta returns home to host the UBC Thunderbirds in the final weekend of the 2019 half of the season.
