EDMONTON – The Golden Bears and Pandas Tennis teams continued to roll in 2020 with both team claiming the 2020 Western Regional Championship, defeating the UBC Thunderbirds, Sunday afternoon at Saville Community Sports Centre.

The Pandas started the day powering over the Thunderbirds 5-2, while the Bears dominated their competition with a 6-1 win. With their respective wins, both teams successfully book their tickets to the 2020 Tennis Canada University Championship in Montreal and Toronto this summer.

Earning their 14th-stright Western Canadian title, the Bears had little trouble with the ‘Birds, dropping just a single match in a tough three set match-up.

The Bears dominated in doubles, winning on three matches handily, including a decisive 8-1 win for Zack Perala and Quin Pon.

UBC would present more of a challenge for the Bears in single, forcing two matches into a third and deciding set. However, that did not stop Kiran Phaterpekar, Neel Phaterpekar, Jared Maclean, Zack Perala, Jun Makita from picking up wins.

Meanwhile, the Pandas also claim their 14th consecutive Western Canada title. After dropping their first doubles match 8-4, Alberta was able to rebound with an 8-2 and 8-3 wins heading into their singles matches.

Wins in match No. 1,3,4 and 5 would be enough to propel the Pandas over their visitors, with Tereza Simonva, Jessica Kreutz, Samantha Chapman, and Alina Jurca all picking up victories in singles. The most impressive match was Kreutz’s 6-0, 6-0 match No. 3 singles win over UBC’s Sara Zupanc.

The Pandas will head to Montreal in August and look to defend their national title from 2019, while the Bears will travel to Toronto, seeking their first national championship since winning in 2017.
