Ganser leads Pandas to eighth straight win

Pandas earn program's 600th all-time win

EDMONTON - Fourth-year Pandas forward Kennedy Ganser scored her seventh goal of the season, leading Alberta to a 3-1 win over the visiting Mount Royal Cougars, Friday night at Clare Drake Arena.

Rookie Madison Willan, and fifth-year captain Cayle Dillon also scored for the Pandas, who earned their eighth-straight conference win. The win keeps them in second in the CW standings with a 12-6-1-0 record and 38 points.

The win was also the 600th in program history, with head coach Howie Draper becoming the first coach in the U SPORTS era to win 600 games.

Anna Purschke scored the lone Cougars goal, while Zoe DeBeauville was outstanding in the loss, stopping 25 of the 27 shots she faced. With the loss, MRU stays locked into fourth in Canada West with a 9-9-1-0 record.

Coming off a sweep last weekend over Saskatchewan, the Pandas picked up right were they left off on Friday night. They outshot MRU 13-3 in the first, and if it weren't for a handful of stellar DeBeauville saves, would have taken the lead.

They finally broke the deadlock early in the second, as Ganser tapped in a feed from Dillon, beating a helpless DeBeauville.

Despite being heavily outshot, surrendering another 10 shots in the second, the Cougars kept the deficit at one heading into the third period. The Pandas thought they had added to their lead, but a second goal was called off due to a high stick.

The Pandas finally finally added to their lead in the third, as Willan scored her eighth of the season on the powerplay.

Purschke gave the Cougars some life late in the third, as she beat Pandas starter Halle Oswald five-hole with four minutes left. However, Oswald made the save on a final Cougars chance in the final minute, before Dillon sealed the win with an empty-net tally.

The two teams will finish their season series tomorrow night, with the Cougars hosting the Pandas at 6:00 p.m. at the Flames Community Arena.
