EDMONTON – Team captain Megan Tywoniuk’s perfect shooting fueled her team’s win over the visiting Mount Royal University Cougars, the University of Alberta Pandas earning the weekend sweep with a 69-44 result, Saturday night at Saville Community Sports Centre.
The Edmonton native went 6-for-6, including 4-for-4 beyond the arc, to lead her squad with a game-high 16 points. Sophomore guard Morgan Mudge added 13 points while senior guard Vanessa Wild, fresh off claiming the team record for most points in a single game on Friday, notched 12 points and eight rebounds tonight.
First-year forward Jenika Martens led the visitors with seven points and eight boards in the loss.
Alberta and Mount Royal were back and forth on the scoreboard to start the first quarter, six lead changes detailing the action before a Tywoniuk long-distance bucket charged an 8-0 run for the Pandas to get the home team up by an 18-12 score.
After trading baskets to start the second, another Tywoniuk trey jumpstarted a 15-3 run, the Kinesiology major putting up seven points in the quarter, Alberta entering halftime with a 37-23 lead.
The third frame was a low-scoring affair, both teams shooting around 20% from the field, and with Mount Royal out-rebounding the Pandas 18-12, the momentum started to shift towards the road team, only to have fourth-year Alberta forward Mackenzie Cook get five of the last six points of the quarter to grab the momentum back.
The hosts used it to have their best quarter in the final frame, scoring 21 points in the final 10 minutes, including five baskets from long distance and seven points off turnovers.
The Pandas finished with a 46% shooting percentage alongside a 57% clip from beyond the arc while the Cougars struggled at 26% and 27%, respectively.
Alberta improves to 6-2 and will finish the 2019 half of the regular season on the road against the Regina Cougars. The 2-4 Mount Royal Cougars head home to host the Victoria Vikes.
