Pandas top Vikes for third-straight win

By Victoria Sports Information on November 15, 2019

VICTORIA – The University of Alberta Pandas spoiled the University of Victoria Vikes home opener with a 67-52 win on Friday night at the CARSA Performance Gym.

The Vikes were playing their first game in nearly two weeks and the Pandas capitalized on their rust early in the first quarter.

Fifth-year guard Vanessa Wild got going in the first with nine of her 23 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the first frame, as the Pandas enjoyed a 12-3 run to close out the first quarter 17-10 in this Canada West bought.

The Vikes tried to claw back in during the second quarter. Kristy Gallagher drove to the lane and picked up the foul. She missed completing the and-1, but cleaning up the garbage was Morgan Roskelley, who laid in two of her six points. The Vikes were shooting below 20 percent until the end of the second quarter.

Despite Roskelley’s best efforts, the Pandas always had an answer for the Vikes whenever they began to make a run.

The Vikes cut the Pandas lead to seven in the third after a layup by Ashlyn Day (who had a team-high 14 points), but Wild built the lead back up to 10 with the three-point play underneath the hoop.
The Pandas also didn’t allow too many second-chance opportunities for the Vikes. They won the battle of the boards 45-35. The Pandas grabbed as many defensive rebounds as the Vikes had total rebounds.

The domination on the glass also allowed the Pandas to blast the Vikes 52-18 on points in the paint.

Brooklyn Legault was the other Panda in double figures with 13 points on 11 shots.

The Pandas improved to 4-1, while the Vikes fell to 2-1.

The Vikes and Pandas will wrap up the weekend set tomorrow night at the CARSA Performance Gym. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. Catch all the action on CanadaWest.tv, brought to you by CO-OP.
