2017 Sports Wall of Fame Inductees

A. Danielle Bourgeois, B.A. (‘05), L.L.B. (‘09)

  •  Member of the Pandas hockey team from 1999-2005, serving as the team captain from 2003-2005.
  • Five-time Canada West all-star, five-time CIS All-Canadian, two-time CIS Women’s Hockey Player of the Year and the 2000 Canada West and CIAU Rookie of the Year
  • Four-time CIS National Champion (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004) and five-time Canada West Champion (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005)
  • 2004 and 2005 Bakewell Trophy Award winner as the University of Alberta’s Female Athlete of the Year
  • Upon her graduation, Bourgeois was the all-time CIS scoring leader, amassing 106 goals and 212 points in 85 conference games.
  • First member of the Alberta Pandas hockey team to be inducted into the University of Alberta Sports Wall of Fame

Dr. John Hogg - MA (1978), Ph.D (1982)

  • Golden Bears and Pandas swimming program head coach from 1976 to 1990

  • Streamlined the Golden Bears and Pandas swimming teams into one unified program, while increased funding to the Pandas to match that of the Golden Bears

  • Led the Golden Bears and Pandas to a combined five Canada West championships, and 13 podium finishes at the CIAU national championship

  • Associate Professor and Professor in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation from 1986 to 2003, whose work in sport psychology led to new and re-crafted courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the Faculty, with garnered attention throughout the institution

  • Spent 13 years as a Sport Psychologist for the Pandas Basketball, Soccer, Ice Hockey, Field Hockey and Volleyball teams, helping them capture 12 national championships during that time

  • 2015 Geoff Gowan Lifetime Achievement award winner for lifetime contributions to coaching development in Canada

James Lazaruk - B.Sc (1971), B.Ed. (1973)

  • Offensive lineman for the Golden Bears football team from 1971-1973

  • Won two Hardy Cup Championships (1972 & 1973), and the 1972 Vanier Cup as a student-athlete

  • 1972 Canada West first team all-star and CIAU All-Canadian

  • Served as the Golden Bears offensive coordinator and assistant coach from 1979-1981, winning three-consecutive conference championships, and the 1980 Vanier Cup.

  • Golden Bears football head coach for two seasons (1982 and 1983), winning the 1983 Canada West Coach of the Year award

  • Coaching resume spans over three decades, including high school and Canadian junior football championships, and 25 years as a women’s basketball coach with Salisbury high school and MacEwan University

Dr. David Otto - BMSc (1986), MD (1988)

  • Forward for the Golden Bears hockey team from 1983 to 1988, serving as an alternate captain in 1987 and 1988
  • Two-time Canada West Champion (1984/1985) and 1986 CIAU National Champion
  • Recorded three-straight 50 point seasons, and ranks in the top 20 in program history in games played, assists, and points
  • 1988 University of Alberta President’s Trophy Recipient, awarded to student-athletes who best exhibit sportsmanship, leadership and integrity
  • Member of the 1987 Golden Bears bronze medal winning team at the 1987 Winter Universiade Games in Czechoslovakia
